MARE VITREUM. Mélanges offerts à Danièle Foy

RESUME : Danièle Foy, Emeritus Director of Research at the CNRS (Centre Camille Jullian -UMR7299, Aix-en-Provence), is one of the driving forces behind the development of glass archaeology in France and abroad. She is one of the few researchers, on an international scale, to have devoted her entire career to the history and archaeology of glass, its modes of production and marketing, and the evolution of uses and consumption habits through the ages, from Antiquity to the pre-industrial period. She has taken a multidisciplinary approach to the Mediterranean area, her favourite region, from Provence to the Levant coast, through the archaeology of materials and objects, Greek and Latin archives and sources, and physico-chemical analyses. She has directed numerous university projects, masters and theses, and has led research teams in projects that have given new impetus to this scientific sector, which had been sidelined for too long. At the same time, her key involvement in the French Association for Glass Archaeology (AFAV) has opened the doors of this field to a multitude of glass enthusiasts - specialists, amateurs, researchers, students, craftsmen and professionals - who regularly come together to discuss this noble, surprising and secret material.
These tribute, intended to honour 50 years of a prolific career, bring together 28 previously unpublished scientific contributions on themes dear to Danièle’s heart, centred on archaeological glass. They offer a journey and a plunge into space and time, where the Mediterranean becomes MARE VITREUM and links Europe to the Eastern worlds.
