Resume :

Pins, rings, rosaries, medals, nails and even books - all these objects can be found in burials from the modern period. Treated according to precise protocols, both in the field and during studies, this material allows us to go far beyond the clichés usually accepted for 16th-19th century funerary contexts. With almost 2,000 objects inventoried in a wide range of materials, and over 250 of them detailed in catalogues, the work presented in this book sheds renewed light on the instrumentum of this period.
This work was prompted by a round table organised in Nancy in 2022 by the CimMoNE research programme. The aim of the round table was to bring together a number of researchers who had been confronted with this type of corpus, and to provide access to collections that were often unpublished and the result of recent archaeological operations.
The sixteen articles gathered here, covering both mainland France and the French overseas territories, deal firstly with methodological and interdisciplinary issues. Secondly, they provide regional summaries and then look at individual sites. Finally, more specific studies analyse objects of piety, textiles and ‘faith’ or ‘engagement’ rings. All of the texts in this book have sought to place the artefacts in the context in which they were found, and to interpret them as part of the whole of the burial site.
This book brings together a number of contributions and references that archaeoanthropologists and instrumentum specialists need to help them identify objects and analyse 16th- to 19th-century funerary contexts. It is one of the first to provide a comprehensive overview of small items of furniture in modern-period burials.
