For over 15 years, new research has been undertaken on the site of Javols-Anderitum (Lozère), ancient capital of Gevaudan (Gabali, province of Aquitaine), seeking to take stock of knowledge, to assess the extent of it and its potential, and to engage in new excavations.
It is the assessment of this work which is provided here in the form of a long synthesis on a small Gallo-Roman town, quite isolated in a mountainous setting in the southern Massif Central. With its historical context, it is the evolution of this town which is well traced, and that of its urban and its monumental finery, as also for example its environment, particularly relevant here.
Numerous "Notes" accompany this richly illustrated text, providing ways of accessing the evidence, with much of the same field data, and accompanied by various analysis and special studies.
Thus emerges the story of this site, apparently small but representative of cities of "deep Gaul, from a now well documented Gallic occupation, apparently important, and until its virtual disappearance in the early Middle Ages (7th century? ) in favour of the new regional power of Mende.
