Abstract: How did people build their houses in ancient times? How did you live there? How did they talk about it?

From the construction site of the house to its literary evocation, through its decoration or its food remains, the sources on the ancient house are multiple and disparate. Treated by different specialists, they are often published separately. The originality of this book is to bring together in a multidisciplinary approach different methods of study of the house, archaeological, literary, art history, in order to nourish reflections on the contribution and, sometimes, the limits of the combination of sources. On the methodological level, several contributions also question the traditional classifications of the house based on their plan, in order to invite the integration of the plurality of data. Archaeological studies of construction techniques, domestic space and its movable remains thus accompany literary analyses of terms or discourses related to the house. The focus on the Greek and Roman worlds from the archaic period onwards widens towards pre-Roman Iberia, which provides a useful counterpoint, highlighting the sometimes parallel and sometimes dissimilar developments in the form of housing in the central and western Mediterranean. The shape of the house in north-western Roman Gaul is the subject of special treatment, with several case studies. The fifteen articles gathered in this volume, which often present the results of recent and unpublished research, sketch answers to the questions placed in the foreground. The form of the ancient house, despite the shortcomings of our sources, thus appears more distinctly as a material envelope and as a living space.
